Maughan lays out his credentials amid controversy

Maughan told the meeting, “I’ve been working in procurement for five years and I don’t set the prices. My role is to oversee the information and ensure we have fair and honest competitions for all.” He went on to say that, “ I applied through an open competition for the job. I’ve a degree in economics and political science, I was involved in procurement in the army in my time there and I’ve undertaken a certificate in procurement and a diploma in emergency planning.”

Flynn hits out at council’s procurement policies

As part of a wide ranging contribution on the overall financial state of Mayo County Council at its monthly meeting, Cllr Peter Flynn hit out at the procurement polices of the council and those responsible for running it. The Westport based Fine Gael councillor said: “We’ve John Maughan (procurement officer for Mayo County Council), who knows nothing about procurement. All he does is alienate people it seems. I spoke to one person who sourced all the supplies for their office from the one supplier in town (Castlebar). Now they have eight suppliers, eight purchase orders, eight different things to sign off on. It probably costs three times as much in the end.”

Old friends meet again tonight in FBD decider

Just like last year Mayo will square off against NUIG in the home final of the FBD League on a Friday night in McHale Park. The prize for the winners, a trip to New York in October to take on the exiles in the away final, should be enough motivation for any amateur player, but both sides have bigger fish to fry in the coming days and weeks, which will be a distraction this evening.

NUIG 14/1 to win the Sigerson

Following NUIG’s narrow win over Galway last weekend in the FBD, the university has attracted some interest in the betting markets for the Sigerson Cup which will be held in Galway this year.
